Spellbound: An FWD Editor
Gets Hypnotized

Fashion Wire Daily NY August 23, 2002 - "I call myself the last resort, as unfortunately, at the moment that's what I really am. It's such as shame, as the effect of hypnosis as a healing tool is extremely powerful," Dr. Trudy Beers, clinical hypnotherapist, and founder of the Tribeca Hypnosis & Healing Institute, told FWD.

"One of today's killers is stress-- stress is very wearing on your body, it ages you tremendously and leads to negative thinking and bad habits," she added.

The fashion world has certainly contributed to the wear and tear of this frazzled fashion follower, so I decide before the craziness of New York fashion week begins, it's time to clear my chakras, release guilt, fear, anger and shame-- which, according to Dr. Trudy, "are the emotions I work on with all my clients" -- and hopefully sleep a little better at night. Dr. Trudy has studied the mind for over 30 years so I feel safe releasing mine into her capable hands.

The first call of order is a detailed test including a Neurolinguistic Learning Channel Profile; the trick is to write down the first answer that comes into your head.

After all the brainstorming, it's time to meet Dr. Trudy at her downtown Tribeca office. She's friendly, warm and almost maternal as she asks meticulous questions on childhood, "where you learn behaviors which can become habits" and your mental and physical health concerns. It is an elaborate process but I felt assured Dr. Trudy had a full understanding of me.

Dr. Trudy will only see clients who fill in the test: "If they don't want to, it means they don't want to look into themselves" and those who want to change. "I will not see a smoker who doesn't truly want to quit as it is a waste of mine and their time."

Hypnosis relies on the theory that the subconscious is the repository of all our emotions, memories, beliefs and even illnesses. The person being hypnotized must actively choose to do so by acting on the suggestions of the hypnotist. "The subconscious is young, 10 years old -- it is your inner child, so to speak -- it is open
and will believe what you tell it. So under hypnosis, if you tell the subconscious certain truths it will accept them; this is how you can change your way of thinking and in turn your behaviors and habits." Dr. Trudy explained.

After going through several states of trance -- some deeper than others -- I am awakened, it felt maybe 15 minutes have gone by, and I am shocked to discover I have 'been under' for an hour and half. Before I was hypnotized Dr. Trudy took a crystal on a chain and dangled it over my seven chakras. The crystal didn't budge, meaning I was blocked by stress, anxiety, worry and guilt. After my session she holds up the crystal again and it gleefully swings round and round, I am unblocked and open.

The feeling of relaxation and contentment after hypnosis is almost incomparable. And a week later I can confirm that the feeling of relaxation has remained, I have slept like a baby almost efery night and my "vices," although not altogether gone, have been easier to resist.
